Preservation

The history of Henrico County involves the stories and geneaology of its citizens, aging architecture, and artifacts from various time periods. It is the preservation of what is a part of Henrico County's history that is the mission of the Henrico County Historical Society.

  • Endangered Structures: Our major efforts, coupled with those of our preservation partners, are concentrated in saving historic structures in danger of being demolished. Our most recent preservation efforts helped save Springfield Baptist Church from destruction. We have also saved other historic sites from the wrecking ball.
  • Lost Architecture: Unfortunately, some of Henrico County's historic structures have been lost due to demolition or failure to save it from advancing age; we have recorded the stories of some of these lost structures on our website.
  • Oral Histories: We have started efforts to collect and preserve the oral histories of our members and citizens of Henrico County, especially those participating in past and current wars and military conflicts.
  • Genealogical Information: We can provide basic genealogical information to those tracing their roots back to Henrico County families; our Genealogy page lists other organizations that can provide further assistance.
  • Quarterly meetings: Lastly, each of our quarterly meetings involves the presentation of a historical topic and/or touring of a historic site in Henrico County or surrounding area.
